How to Cook Pak Choi (Bok Choy, Chinese White Cabbage, Chinese Celery Cabbage, Horse’s Ear, Shanghai Green, Pak Choy) – 5 Recipes

Pak Choi is a member of the cabbage family; it is a leafy soft vegetable which is often used in stir fry dishes and goes by a variety of names, most commonly Pak Choi or Bok Choy. So, maybe you don’t often make a stir fry; well here are 5 recipes to try with Pak Choi which don’t revolve around a wok and stir frying. Give them a go and let us know!

 

Salmon with Pak Choi

 

  • 4 Servings
  • Preparation time: 15 minutes
  • Cooking time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 salmon fillets
  • 4 pak choi
  • 80ml soy sauce
  • 120ml of water
  • A few drops of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil, to taste

 

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, melt sugar in water and soy sauce.
  2. Add minced garlic and a few drops of lemon juice. Cook for one minute.
  3. Place salmon fillets, refrigerate and marinate for 2 hours.
  4. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and blanch pak choi for a couple of minutes. Drain and set aside.
  5. Heat a non-stick pan over high heat and brown salmon fillets for two minutes per side.
  6. Add a few tablespoons of the marinade and cook for an additional two minutes.
  7. Transfer salmon fillet to serving plates and toss pak choi in the same skillet for two minutes, adding more marinade juice if necessary.
  8. Serve pak choi with salmon fillets.

 

Additional tips

  • Sprinkle with toasted black sesame seeds.
  • You can also prepare tuna fillets with pak choi, following the same procedure.
  • Season with a few lemon or lime drops.

 

Ham and Pak Choi Quiche

 

  • 4 Servings
  • Preparation time: 10 minutes
  • Cooking time: 40 minutes

 

Ingredients

1 package puff pastry

  • 1 pak choi
  • 200g ricotta cheese
  • 50g grated Edam cheese
  • 180g roasted ham, sliced
  • 2 eggs
  • 30 g walnuts, chopped
  • 10 g breadcrumbs
  • Extra virgin olive oil, to taste
  • Salt, to taste

 

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and blanch pak choi for a couple of minutes. Drain well and cut into smaller pieces.
  3. Place pak choi in a mixing bowl. Add ricotta cheese, grated Edam cheese, roasted ham, beaten eggs and chopped walnuts.
  4. Mix well to combine.
  5. Grease a cake pan and roll out the puff pastry dough.
  6. Fill it with a mixture.
  7. Sprinkle with breadcrumbs and bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Serve and enjoy.

 

Additional tips

  • You can replace ricotta with cottage or fresh goat cheese.
  • Mix breadcrumbs with chopped hazelnuts and grated Parmigiano cheese for a crunchy crust.
  • Cover with foil if it starts to brown too early.

 

Octopus with Pak Choi

 

  • 4 Servings
  • Preparation time: 20 minutes
  • Cooking time: 10 minutes

 

Ingredients

  • 400g cooked octopus tentacles, sliced lengthwise
  • 2 pak choi
  • Lemon juice, to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil, to taste
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

 

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and blanch pak choi for a couple of minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. In the meantime, slice the octopus tentacles lengthwise.
  3. In a small bowl, combine lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. Mix with a fork to combine.
  4. Arrange pak choi on serving plate and top with octopus tentacles.
  5. Season with previously prepared dressing.
  6. Serve and enjoy.

 

Additional tips

  • If you cannot buy only tentacles, cook 1,5 kg octopus in boiling water for 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until tender. To cook it faster, use cook two small octopus. If you use frozen octopus, the meat will be more tender.
  • You can season octopus carpaccio and pak choi with balsamic vinegar glaze.

 

 

Pak Choi Soup with Almond Milk

 

  • 2 Servings
  • Preparation time: 10 minutes
  • Cooking time: 18 minutes

 

Ingredients

  • 2 pak choi, chopped
  • 1 white onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 250ml almond milk
  • 200ml vegetable broth
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil, to taste

 

Instructions

  1. Heat extra virgin olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and cook until lightly golden.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  4. Stir in pak choi and cook for one minute.
  5. Season with turmeric, cumin, lemon zest, parsley, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
  6. Pour in vegetable broth and almond milk.
  7. Cook for 12 minutes over medium-low heat.
  8. Serve and enjoy.

 

Additional tips

  • You can replace almond milk with coconut milk.
  • Chop pak choi leaves in strips and stalks in smaller pieces.
  • Serve drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and toasted bread slices.

 

Flavourful Pak Choi

  • Preparation time: 15 minutes
  • Cooking time: 10 minutes

 

Ingredients

  • 2 pak choi, chopped
  • ½ red bell pepper, sliced
  • ½ yellow bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon lemon-infused honey
  • ½ teaspoon lime zest
  • Soy sauce, to taste
  • A handful of almond flakes

Instructions

  1. Heat extra virgin olive oil in a non-stick skillet and saute pak choi for a couple of minutes.
  2. Add bell peppers and blend them with soy sauce.
  3. Cook until the sauce evaporates.
  4. Add lemon-infused honey, almond flakes, and sesame seeds.
  5. Cook for an additional 2 minutes over low heat.
  6. Serve and enjoy.

 

Additional tips

  • Chop pak choi leaves into strips and stems into smaller pieces.
  • You can replace lime zest with lemon or grated ginger.
  • Before serving, if you like crunchy texture, sprinkle the dish with toasted black sesame seeds and chopped nuts.
